pressure ever.Q: The first time you auditioned for Miles Davis, you didn't get the gig. Were you heartbroken?A: No. I kind of understood the politics of it. I auditioned with the keyboard player at the time. I won't say his name, but he had a buddy who wanted the gig, too. So he was kind of like, "Meh, let's see what you can do." So I actually felt kind of relieved, as I didn't know what I was doing anyway. This wasn't just any jazz gig. This was Miles Davis. I can't go in there and just totally embarrass myself. So it was fine.Q: The public image of Miles is that he's a pretty sullen, mysterious man. What was he really like?A: He was just like a quiet guy like all the rest of us musicians. Most of us, or a lot of us, are very introverted, but we're into everything. We'll talk and properly engage. He was just one of those guys.Q: What did you learn from him as a bandleader?A: To totally be who you are. Be yourself. Express yourself with heart. Basically, you study your craft as much as you can, but when you hit the stage it's just a bank to draw from, and you interpret that in your own way. Just let it fly.Q: After Miles, you joined Fishbone. What kind of adjustment was it to go from a jazz legend to a noisy punk funk band?A: The great thing about that organization is that it was a total democracy. Whatever idea was the best idea, that was the idea that we were going to do, so start thinking.Q: Let's talk about the latest album, "A Sunshine State of Mind." How does it differ from the previous releases?A: It is based on one topic, which is the eternal sunshine of southern California. For the most part, it's a summer place. For me, it was time in my mind to do a record that has a title where all the songs tie in together. It's just a collection of songs that captures some of the feelings of my unusual take on summer.A: I'm not on the road too much these days because I have a young daughter. I'm probably going to be doing a little bit more TV and movie background work. I'm finishing up the next Soul of John Black record, which is the flip side of "A Sunshine State of Mind." It's actually going to be a little darker. It's super groovy. We're also going to be doing more festivals with "A Sunshine State of Mind," and then put out this new thing in the fall.

The Soul of John Black's hybrid of funk, soul, rock and R New Balance 998 Womens might be the perfect tonic for those of us still suffering from the winter blues, particularly the material from the most recent release, "A Sunshine State of Mind."John "JB" Bigham says the concept album of sorts about life in Southern California was inspired not only by the weather but by changes in his personal life."I have a 3 year old daughter, and that's kind of taken me into a brighter place," he says. "The (album is a) combination of the good life in Los Angeles and all these nice things with a little whiskey poured over it."Bigham recently talked to Link about the album and his stints with Miles Davis and the ska punk funk band Fishbone. See him Friday at the Orpheum Theater as part of the Sioux Falls Jazz Blues concert series.Question: Was there a moment in your childhood where you heard an artist and something clicked that made you take notice?Answer: Yeah, it was a weird combination. There were two that really stuck out for me. Sly and the Family Stone and the Rolling Stones. It was something about the backbeat. The early Stones stuff is heavy on the backbeat, and when I heard that beat I was like, "Oh my gosh. That's the greatest thing I've ever heard." I wanted to play drums and just hit that beat all the time.Q: What made you pick up the guitar instead?A: I was into music, and like any kid you get these various instruments. The guitar was just one that I happened to have, and I never thought anything about it. I had one, but it was just laying around. What happened was that later on when I was 12 or 13, I saw a friend play guitar. He had the same guitar that I had, but he was actually playing it. It blew me away. I was really blown away watching him play, and I was also embarrassed that I had a guitar but didn't know how to play it. It didn't make any sense. So I just started my long journey into guitar.Q: Did it come New Balance Wl574bfk

easy for you once you started to play?A: Yeah, it came easy because it was a really personal thing. I didn't have anything to prove. There was no pressure at all. I just kind of hung out with my friends, who we all had New Balance Premier 998
