John Ascuaga Reflects on 58 Years at the Nugget in Sparks
Sunday, March 17th John Ascuaga's Nugget is throwing a party with champagne, cupcakes and green beer (it is St. Patrick's Day) to celebrate the Nugget's 58th year in business.
You may be surprised to know that John Ascuaga drives himself to Sparks from his ranch in Carson Valley and he pumps his own gas. (People are often surprised to see him filling up his pick up truck at the pump.)
John Ascuaga mentions the food and the restaurants. He eats at one or another nearly every day. What's his favorite dish? He can't name just one, but his kids say they often catch him ordering the Jackpot Filet at the Steakhouse, Osso Buco at Restaurante Orozko, or dining on Cioppino at the Oyster Bar. When he's finished eating, he usually gets up and greets customers at their tables.

When you do see him, he's likely to introduce himself, shake your hand enthusiastically and give you his business card. "I enjoy meeting my customers," he said. "I do it because I appreciate them being here."
"Every week we have a managers' meeting where we recognize employees," said Stephen. The hotel and casino has 65 70 managers who oversee 1400 employees in everything from medical to laundry to engineering. "We recognize employees every month for service with a pin or the employee of the month," Stephen said.
His business card doesn't list a title under his name says he doesn't have a title.
I asked John Ascuaga what he'll be thinking of as he pours champagne on Sunday. "I'll think of the day we opened," he said smiling. "It was sunny. We opened at 11am on March 17th." Why St. Patrick's Day? "It's a lucky day," said Michonne. Perfect!
